The Theory Behind Acupuncture

The purpose of acupuncture is to stimulate or sedate Qi (pronounced ‘chi’ – it means energy) as a way of bringing balance back to the body. Dis-ease is seen as a disruption of the flow of Qi. Balance is achieved by selecting and stimulating the proper points along the body’s meridian system.

In my clinic at Third Space Wellness in Kelowna BC, I will accurately diagnose where your root imbalance lies and we will work together to bring your health back into a state of balance. Common side effects are increased energy, improved sleep quality and a deeper sense of calm.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

What can Traditional Chinese Medicine treat?

Traditional Chinese Medicine is capable of treating nearly any ailment that might show up. Historically TCM was about 80% treatment with herbal medicines and 20% acupuncture. In the western world because of Acupuncture’s popularity it is used much more often than herbal medicines. However, your practitioner should be well versed in both if they are practicing a true form or TCM. For a lengthy list of what Traditional Chinese Medicine is commonly used to treat Click Here.

What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?

Prescription of herbal medicine according to the principles of TCM.Herbal prescriptions or formulas can be anywhere from 2 to 20 herbs. They will consist of different roots, flowers, seeds, leaves, etc. and will be combined to treat the individual.

How does Chinese Herbal Medicine Work?

Each herb is seen to have it’s own energetic make-up, it’s own taste and it’s own property of being cooling, heating, drying, moistening, invigorating, etc. The energetic property of the herbal formula is matched with your TCM diagnosis to balance out your system. If there is heat, we use cooling herbs, if there is stagnation, we use herbs that move Qi or Blood, if there is a deficiency we use herbs to tonify and nourish that organ system etc.

All behaviors lead to certain patterns that show up eventually as dis-ease within the physical, mental and emotional body. Shining a light on these behaviors is always part of the treatment.

Food is seen the way herbs are seen, as having energetic properties. Diet will be prescribed based on the pattern of imbalance happening within.

In addition to these things, we will talk about your level of activity, hobbies and anything else that might be relevant.
